Below are some ideas for helping your child to keep reading this summer!
Free Online Books for Read Aloud or Independent Reading
Please note: Many websites were made available to students during school closures for free. That status may change depending on the various companies. Please don't feel the need to pay for any of the sites below if the free access (including login information) is no longer available. I just wanted families to have access to these sites while they last. :)
Take Advantage of the Summer Wonder program at KDL Libraries!
The Kent District Libraries have a wonderful online summer reading program for the students. Summer reading will help your child tremendously! You can participate online without going into the actual library! Click HERE to watch the informational video! Comprehension Questions Reading at least 15-20 minutes/day is the best way to help your child improve his/her reading skills! Each student should know his/her reading level (A-Z)! After your child finishes reading, scroll to your child's reading level on the document below and choose a couple questions to discuss together!
Leveled Reading Comprehension Questions Leveled Book Lists! Below are some links for leveled books for summer reading which may be helpful. https://goo.gl/ComhUK - Summer Reading O-Z https://goo.gl/0gR0oR - Summer Reading A- N Birthday Treat Policy
For the protection of our students with allergies, edible birthday treats will no longer be allowed at school. If edible treats are brought to school, they will be sent home by our main office. Items like pencils, erasers, bookmarks, would be great! Thanks for your understanding. A Visitor's Badge Is Needed For the safety of our students, any person in the building during the school day needs to first pick up a visitor's badge in the office. Thanks so much! |

Our goal is for students to be self-directed learners who are able to work collaboratively and achieve their learning goals! There are many aspects of Personalized Learning in our classroom which we will develop throughout the year! Some of these are described below:
Code of CooperationCentral SHINES is our school wide Code of Cooperation! Students monitor themselves and support each other in the following areas throughout the day:
S = Show Respect H = Have Self-Control I = Is Trustworthy N = Never Give Up E = Engage to Learn S = Stay Safe Class Vision
It is very important for students to understand why we come to school! We worked collaboratively to create the following Class Vision: We will learn as much as we can every day so that we can graduate from High School, be able to go to college, and get great jobs! Social Contract
The students worked together to create a Social Contract that will guide our learning throughout the year. Our Social Contract shows what we aspire to be both in and out of school! Building Student Voice and Leadership SkillsOur classroom jobs are designed to teach students how to be leaders in our classroom! Our leaders help everyone follow our Social Contract, procedures, and Class Vision Students learn to lead in honest, positive ways by being responsible for the following positions:
•Contract Raters assess how the class is following the Social Contract throughout the day. •Learning Target Busters start each lesson by having the class read our Big Idea, Learning Target, and WHY this goal is important. They also review the Learning Target periodically during the lesson to focus everyone's learning and insure that we are all on task. •Transition Monitors organize our transitions and evaluate the timing and noise level. For instance, they make sure that we are organized and on time for our specials each day. •T-Masters use the "Time Out" symbol to bring the class back together as a whole group. •Checkmate Leaders help the class keep data on how the students work together to monitor their own behavior! Each day our leaders create a line plot of our findings and discuss them with the class. Students work together to earn 15 minutes of game time by spelling the motivational phrases!! Our Awesome Academics Support Personal Mastery!Kenowa Hills uses a Gradual Release of Responsibility model for academic lessons which includes....
•A Focus Lesson - "I Do It" •Guided Instruction - "We Do It" •Collaborative Learning - "We Do It Together" •Independent Learning - "You do It Alone" Students Self-Assess and Set Learning Goals!
Each student has a Personal Mastery portfolio where they can track their progress and set personal goals. Their Personal Mastery Folders include: •Fall, Winter, and Spring NWEA tests •Points Earned on Accelerated Reader •Mastery of Third Grade Essential Reading, Writing, and Math Standards •Mastery of Multiplication and Division Facts •Spelling Test Results •Self-Evaluation of how they are following our Social Contract |
Below are some ideas for helping your child maintain his/her math skills this summer! Please be sure to scroll all the way down to check out all the online math game choices!
Multiplication and Division Fact Fluency
Please continue reviewing those multiplication and division facts this summer! The fourth grade teachers tell us that being fluent with the facts is a tremendous help in meeting their math expectations. For instance, it's difficult to learn long division when you are struggling with the basic facts! Flash cards work great! Multiplication.com is also a wonderful resource. Your child can take the timed tests at home and get immediate feedback! Just click on "Auto-Scored Quizzes" at the top, and then on "Multiplication Self-Correcting Quizzes" or "Division Quizzes". After each quiz, your child will receive the following information: Green = Facts that were answered accurately and quickly Yellow = Facts that were answered accurately, but it took more time Red = Facts that were answered incorrectly Total Time in minutes : seconds is indicted at the top. Students really enjoy the multiplication.com online game options as well.. Thank you so much for helping your child maintain their fact fluency skills over the summer! Additional Sites to practice math skills (including multiplication & division) are below:: •Treasure Chest Multiplication - Find the location of given products on a multiplication grid. •Glacier Hopping Multiplication Game •Factor Pair Up •Math Playground •Drag Race Division •Math Game Time •Grand Prix Multiplication •Car Rush Multiplication •Times Tables •Fish Shop Multiplication •Multiplication Games •Multiplication Memory •Multiplication Balloons •Clock Works •Connect 4 Multiplication •Times Tables Games Family Math Game Website

There are challenges, an activity of the day, and all previous activities of the day are archived. Practice pages and online games are linked as well. The first part of the website are the games by grade level. As you scroll down it gives you ideas of how to make dice and spinners at home.
