Weekly Homework
Weekly homework is indicated on the Homework Contracts. Keep the homework contract in your child's homework folder so that they can bring it back and forth to school each day. On Friday I will collect this contract and students will receive a new one. Weekly homework typically includes the following:
1. Students need to record their daily reading minutes in the boxes on the front of the contract to reach a total of at least 80 minutes by Friday. Please sign to show that your child read those minutes. The totals won't be counted unless there is a parent signature.
2. Weekly spelling words and homework activities are attached to the Homework Contract! Students need to complete three of the Tic-Tac-Toe activities with their spelling words by Friday. These need to be stapled behind the Tic-TacToe sheet. If your child chose an activity that doesn't need to be written down on paper, such as writing his/her words with shaving cream, please just initial that square.
4. The back of the contract is for students to record their math homework as it is assigned. Please be sure to check it each day. The math homework is always due the following school day.
Homework Tips for Parents
1. Provide a quiet, well-lit place for homework. It should be free of distractions, although some kids study well with quiet background music.
2. Emphasize that homework is the child's responsibility, although it is helpful to be available as a "coach" or "consultant".
3. Help your child develop and stick to a regular homework routine. Some kids can do homework immediately after school while others need time to unwind. Encourage your child to do the most difficult homework first.
4. Even if you do not understand the assignment, you can still help with organization by suggesting where information can be found or by offering support.
5. Don't allow your child to watch TV while doing homework.
6. Encourage your child to do quiet activities if he or she does not have homework, but has brothers or sisters who do.
